The way to think about it is that the "initial event" is an example of what the character has to deal with, but it's not a call to change. In this football example I'm using, I could start out with the hero reading the game lineup and seeing himself on the bench again. This isn't a call to adventure, but it does create instant conflict. You can tell he wants to play, and you can tell he's disappointed again. You get a feeling that the book is something about him getting to play.

Think of James Bond movies. They all start with an exciting action sequence, but none of those are really calls to adventure, they're just illustrations of the kind of man he is and what he's capable of. The Call comes later when "M" gives him a new assignment. Start out the book with the hero in his natural world, tackling things he's used to tackling. THEN introduce something new and exciting.

Once again it depends on genre and plot specifics. You can introduce the reader to the incident early on, but you want to introduce the hero in his natural, ordinary world, because he'll eventually have to return to it.

This is a great post.
