Really good post. Valuable info. Two points especially made me stop and think: that my character must grow in each scene. I've never thought about that which makes me realize that I'm doing it naturally or I'm not doing it at all. Second: I wish I knew when a prologue works. I have a prologue I love. I want to show the heroine at a certain point in her life. I've been told to cut it... I just absolutely don't want to. Not yet. Thanks for such a great blog. Your posts always make me think.

I also use gossip and flashback. Works well in the women's fiction novels. Not so much in the fantasy I'm trying out.

Right now I'm working on "Goal-oriented Problem Solving" to help build the world and the MC. My character's obstacles and skills pretty much drive the plot. I know where I'm going with this; it's the journey that's proving difficult.

Thanks for the good advice. I'll be referring back to this - and just about all your posts really - as I'm crafting my world.

At any rate, I was praising you on the value of the information in your blog - suggesting you transfer it to book form one day.

I also suggested that you and I are opposites as writers. I'm a 'plot as I go' sort. I find it extremely difficult to sit still long enough to plot it out beforehand. My way works in short stories - not in novels.

Your comments at my blog of late have sparked some thinking in me.
